All Things Rosin

I get asked a lot of questions regarding rosin so I put this article together to address some of the most common ones.

Tip Plate Replacement

Check out the video of this process at the end of the post! The old tip plate is removed before a new one is fit. Heat is used to weaken the bond of the old tip plate and liner material and then carefully sheared off with a knife. In this video you will notice how …

Rehair Checklist for Parents

I always encourage my customers to carefully check over their bow when it is dropped off and picked up after service. Most of the time it is the player, but often enough a parent will pick up the bow. When I ask the parent to check over the bow, the most common reply is that …

Checking for crossed hairs

Crossed Hairs

In the video below I show you how I check for crossed hairs in a bow. Just a single crossed hair can have a negative impact on your tone, giving you a gritty and/or metallic sound. Essentially, the bow is tightened to just above playing tension. A thin straight edge or small ruler (a business …

Making a Ferrule

Ferrules

Check out the video of the process at the end of this post! Sheets of sterling silver are marked out with calipers to slightly oversized dimensions. The flat section is measured out about 2 mm wider to give the ferrule tangs to allow handling with pliers. The final 1 mm or so of fitting the …

Determining Hair Length and Quantity

Hair knots

Recently I have had a couple of new customers wonder about how I determine hair length and quantity of hair for my rehairs. It seems so many people have different ideas and preferences to what the perfect length and quantity of hair might be. The truth is each individual bow has a very narrow range …

How Often to Rehair a Bow

Horsehair for rehairs.

How often to rehair a bow is really a factor of the numbers of hours the hair has been used, the type of repertoire being played, and the number of exposures to climate changes. The grip of the hair and quality of sound deteriorate so gradually that it usually goes unperceived until the hair has …

The importance of finding a quality bow technician

It is extremely important to find a quality bow technician for your bow. Someone who is dedicated to maintaining the value, originality, and reliability of your equipment. Whether it is something as seemingly simple and routine as a rehair to a more involved tip plate replacement, it is important not to economize on quality work. …

New octagonal mandrel for making octagonal button rings. Formed out of O1 tool steel and heat treated. Still needs a little clean up but it’s very precise! #toolmaker #millingmachine #bowmaker #archetiet #luthier #metalworking #heattreatment #adbowsllc

A batch of fresh certificates going out today for the last bows. I don’t regularly provide certificates for my bows but the client requested it and I’m thinking it’ll be a nice thing to send along with the new bows. #violin #violinist #violinbow #viola #violist #violabow #bowmaker #archetier #luthier #classicalmusic #adbowsllc

Made some Delrin mandrels for spiral bushings of peg holes for my business partner @jipviolins. Glue doesn’t bond to acetal so I thought the material would be a good option to try out. I made matching pairs of a few sizes to cover a range of possible sizes with a little overlap. #toolmaker #lathework #lathe #violinmaker #violin #bowmaker #archetier #luthier #adbowsllc
